MEDICAL CODING.
Medical Coding is the transformation of a patient's healthcare information like medical procedures, diagnosis, necessary medical equipment and medical services information from the physician's notes. A medical coder transforms this information into universal medical alphanumeric codes.
There are three types of medical alphanumeric codes including ICD, CPT and HCPCS. ICD codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of diagnostic codes published and managed by World Health Organizations (WHO). These codes can classify symptoms, diseases, illness and causes of death. For instance ICD code K90.81 denotes whipple's diseases.
Whipple's disease is a rare bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Tropheryma whipplei. It typically affects the small intestine, but it can also affect other organs including the lungs, heart, joints, and brain. Symptoms can include diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, and joint pain. Treatment usually involves antibiotics and dietary modifications.
Symptoms of Whipple's disease may include:
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Weight loss
• Fatigue
• Joint pain
• Nausea and vomiting
• Night sweats
• Fever
Treatment for Whipple's disease typically involves a combination of antibiotics and other medications. Antibiotics are used to fight infection caused by the bacteria responsible for Whipple's disease. These antibiotics may include sulfonamides, macrolides, penicillin, and cephalosporins. Other medications used to treat Whipple's disease include medications to reduce inflammation, anti-diarrheal medications, and pain medications. In some cases, surgery may be required to remove damaged tissue or to drain an abscess.
